Play Radio Performance:
In 2006 I came back to a post 9/11 New York City after having lived five years abroad. I was not in New York when the towers were struck, but watched them crumble in real time on television. When I returned home, I felt the towers’ absence through the greater presence of police officers below ground. They were stationed on the subway platforms and conducted random searches.
I rented an apartment in Brooklyn and took the subway often. Everyone was in transit, except the officers. I approached one and asked him to search me. I began to accompany this officer on many of his nighttime posts. He was not sure if he could trust me, and I was not sure if I should trust him. We continued to meet despite this.
I kept record of our meetings and logged them in a different forms, one of them a diary. This radio performance is based on that text. It is performed by Ed Vassallo, who plays Officer F and myself, Jill Magid.
